Because it may.

And once posted we must see both pieces together. Every culture has its life affirming as well as shadow sides.

As a golf outsider -- never understood the game or its fans -- this piece explained, as never before, the allure of the sport and the fanatic loyalty of its fans. Once examined within its cultural context, perhaps I can now understand the game's place in Corporate America. Previously, I saw it as only a way for corporate elites to establish another unwritten, unspoken and unexplained hoop to jump through for those who don't get the game, weren't raised knowing about it, or who don't play. Seen through the lens of this blog, it's about them, not necessarily about me or my deficits. One suggestion for those who just don't get it -- in the next post, explain birdies, eagles and bogeys. I don't need explanations of those terms regarding the game, just are they good, bad or neutral. Also, maybe some pointers, besides learning the game, on how to blend different archetypes into this cultural context.

Lovely piece, Andres. But why is it I feel I'm waiting for the shoe to drop in part II?

Andres,

Excellent - very thought provoking!!! I would add - golf is one of the few sports/activities that women and men of all shapes and sizes can all participate in - creating relationship building shared experiences away from the office. Imagine the reaction - as people mingle around the dinner party and those natural ice breaker conversations start around basketball, football, golf - when a great story teller (there is one or two at every party) starts to talk about playing TPC Sawgrass - and a young woman interjects - "I just played that course - how did you approach that par 4 dog-leg left on # 6? That becomes a much more inclusive conversation. Look forward to part 2.
