Inclusion Paradox Sighting: Racial Disparities in Healthcare Add to Costs for All
“Increasingly, the health of our nation is defined by the health of people of color,” said Brian Smedley, vice president and director of the Health Policy Institute of the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies on the release of their latest study on the costs of racial disparities.
According to the study carried out between 2003 and 2006, African-Americans, Hispanics, and Asian-Americans faced $229.4 billion of excess costs due to health inequities. Including lost productivity, lost wages, absenteeism, family leave, and premature death, the amount leaps to $1.24 trillion.
With Census Bureau estimates that half of United States residents will be people of color by 2042, researchers said eliminating health inequities can provide an important source of savings for the country.
This also has implications for employers embarking on wellness and preventive care programs in order to have healthier employees and to reduce their healthcare costs. The better they understand what may be leading to the disparities the better they will be able to design programs and communications that have a higher chance of appealing to diverse populations than what has been done in the past.
